what types of glassware are there?

Types of glassware: An Introduction

Glassware is a staple of many homes and commercial establishments, but there are far more varieties out there than you may think. Whether you need the perfect vessel for a fine wine or a sleek vase for your flowers, here is an introduction to some of the most common types of glassware.

Wine Glasses: Wine glasses come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from tall 'flute' glasses designed specifically for Champagne and sparkling wines, to larger bowls with narrower tops designed to bring out the aromas of red wine. The material used can also vary, with lower-end wine glasses usually made from machine-pressed glass, while more expensive models are made from hand-blown crystal.

Tumblers: Simple tumblers usually come in the shape of an open cylinder with no stem or handle, making them ideal for serving anything from juices and smoothies to cocktails and spirits. Commonly made from either machine-pressed glass or crystal, tumblers come in a range of sizes and shapes. For example, rocks glasses have flatter bottoms than regular tumblers and are well suited for serving whiskey neat on ice as well as many other beverages.

Cups and Mugs: From classic coffee mugs to decorative porcelain teacups, cups and mugs are readily available in all shapes and sizes. There are also numerous types of hot beverage glasses on the market that allow you to sip from etched patterned designs without burning your hands due to their double-wall construction. Some mugs even come with unique insulating containers which prevent heat loss and enable them to be used safely outside without burning your hands when holding them! Of course if you're looking for something more specialised (and perhaps a little more special) there are also espresso cups!

Pitchers: Like cups and mugs there are numerous types of pitchers available in all sorts of designs ranging from practical plastic pitchers with built-in spouts designed specifically for use at parties or family gatherings all the way up to designer crystal pitchers used at five star restaurants around the world. There's also great seasonal décor options in the form of vintage punchbowls!

Decanters: Typically used by knowledgeable connoisseurs who want to enjoy their finest wines without aerating them too quickly, decanters offer an array of shapes ranging from tear drops or oval bowls through to swan necks or nautilus designs that lend any dinner table an extra bit of class!
